Helpful Hints:
Customs
When you land in Tunisia - Once you reach customs, there is usually airport security walking around the line asking questions. Stay calm and confident.
Questions like:
-
What are you doing in *country*
-
Who packed your bags? (Always say JUST you. No me and my husband, or my mom and I. YOU packed it)
-
Where are you staying?

Be prepared to answer these questions.
The Plane Ride
The ride to Djerba is usually one full of crying babies, loud women, and no air conditioning.
There is usually a shuttle that drives you to the door of the plane and you’ll have to walk up the stairs. The same thing happens when the plane lands in Tunisia.
Customs Report
When on the plane, you will need to fill out a customs report. This is routine for every country. They’re just making sure you are not bringing foreign content to the country. Pack a pen in your suitcases!
Water
In cafes, you do have to pay for water. Is is really cheap and you do get a bigger bottle.
Do not drink faucet water (they use well water).
Only drink water from bottles.
Bathrooms
Bathrooms are usually wet because of the bidet (called "salle de bain" there).
Most people in Tunisia use a bidet. So “being courteous of the amount of toilet paper in the bathroom” is pretty nonexistent.
Always have toilet paper on you especially females.
Shopping
Buying things uses the Barter System. Once they find out you’re American they’ll jack the price up. Stay stern and confident.
Buying jewelry?
Buy any and all jewelry in the Jewish parts of Djerba. The quality and prices seem to be better.
Tipping
If “Service Compris” is shown on the bill: DO NOT TIP! Tip is included in bill.
Additional Tips (If service was exceptional) : 1 or 2 dinar
